African musical instruments are used all over the world to produce sounds that are unique to the continent. From the green belts of the Serengeti to the Sahara desert, instruments have been in use for centuries before colonization (transatlantic and trans-Saharan). Here are a few instruments still in use (in their original and modernized forms) that you may not know are from Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Akoting<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Pr\u00e9sent au S\u00e9n\u00e9gal, en Gambie et en Guin\u00e9e-Bissau (tous en Afrique de l’Ouest), l’akoting est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme l’anc\u00eatre du banjo moderne. Selon l’histoire orale, le lieu de naissance de l’instrument est le village de Kanjanka au S\u00e9n\u00e9gal. Il a un corps de calebasse \u00e0 t\u00eate de peau, avec deux longues cordes m\u00e9lodiques et une corde de bourdon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mbira<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Part of the idiophone family, although used worldwide, many of these instruments originated in Africa and are known by different names, such as agidigbo, kisanji, sanza, and the Caribbean marimbula. Recorded in written history as early as the 16th century, variants of these instruments are also found in Siberia. The marimbulla variant is also sometimes used in hip-hop music.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kora<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Il est r\u00e9pertori\u00e9 depuis le 14e si\u00e8cle et, selon l’histoire orale (racont\u00e9e par les griots), l’instrument est originaire du Mali.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ekwe<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Also known as idiophone, variations of these drums are found in Zaire (alimba), Igbo (ekwe), Congo (mukoku or lokole) and Guinea (krin or kolokos). The drum is made from hollowed-out tree trunks, with rectangular slots cut into the top, and comes in different sizes, depending on its intended use.<\/span><\/p>\n

Udu<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Essentiellement une cruche \u00e0 eau en argile perc\u00e9e d’un trou suppl\u00e9mentaire, l’udu est un instrument s\u00e9culaire jou\u00e9 par les femmes Igbo du sud-est du Nigeria. Algaita<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

Sometimes used in jazz recordings, algaita is a double-reed wind instrument used in West Africa, mainly by the Hausa\/Kanuri people of northern Nigeria. The body is covered in leather and, unlike the Iranian sorna (a double-reed wind instrument made from grass), the algaita has four finger holes instead of seven.<\/span><\/p>\n

A little history<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n
