The kalimba<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

The thumb piano, or mbira (a name derived from the Shona language of Zimbabwe) is an African percussion instrument. In the distant past, it was made entirely of wood or bamboo, and may have been in use for several thousand years. The thumb piano with metal keys first appeared around 1,300 years ago along the Zambezi River, in what are now Zimbabwe and Malawi. The instrument has spread widely throughout Africa, and in 2020, Mbira music was approved by UNESCO for inclusion on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mbira consists of a row of metal strips, used as keys, attached to an open-ended wooden calabash or hollow resonator. The keys vary in length, the longest being placed in the center, and each length determines the pitch of the key. The shorter the key, the higher the sound, and the longer the key, the lower the sound. Keys are made from a variety of different metals, such as spring wire and, for more contemporary, handcrafted versions, spoon handles, bicycle spokes and other recycled metal objects.<\/span><\/p>\n

To play the instrument, the performer holds the resonator with his fingers underneath and uses his thumbs to pinch the keys. This produces delightfully pleasant, tranquil sounds. Harmonic or rhythmic sounds can be obtained by plucking the keys simultaneously or alternating the plucks. Tones can overlap to give an orchestral-like effect: full and rich in quality and sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mbira was used for ceremonies such as weddings, funerals and in honor of important people, as well as for religious purposes, to invoke the spirits and ask for their advice. <\/span><\/p>\n

When invoking the spiritual ancestors, the tribe organized a religious ceremony consisting of singing, dancing and playing music until the spirits appeared. The ritual would stop temporarily in the presence of the spirit, and resume once it had gone. It was therefore necessary for the mbira to produce a sound capable of \"projecting into the heavens\" and attracting the spirits to earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over hundreds of years, different people across the continent have created variations of the mbira, changing the style and name, but the overall design remains consistent. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Australian Museum has a small collection of thumb pianos from several cultural groups, showing diversity in size, material and design. Thumb pianos include the likembe and sanza from Congo, the kadongo and akogo from Uganda and the kalimba from Kenya.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the second half of the 20th century, the African thumb piano was adopted by contemporary musicians, particularly in Europe and the Americas. It not only has a long history, but also a promising future.<\/span><\/p>\n
