The 17-note Gecko Kalimba in camphor wood is light without the weight of alto or baritone notes. 

But... how do you tune the Alto kalimba by a whole 5th, from G to C of the baritone scale, an octave below middle C? The answer: through a variety of tricks. Yes, we can tune the alto kalimba to low C. (OK, it's not the "low C" of a bass singer - it's a "low baritone C" - let's call it the "low C of the kalimba".

This is a full octave below the lowest note of the standard kalimba).

Diatonic scale, diatonic Kalimba

If you don't know the word "diatonic", learn it! It describes a kalimba that has only notes of a certain major scale: "Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si Do..." It can have 8 notes, 10 or 17 notes... but the notes are all in a particular key, like C or G.

And it will have all these notes in this key, on a particular scale.

When you move to higher octaves, you stay in the key that the lower octave has defined. The low note of a diatonic kalimba doesn't have to be "C". And there are no extra notes, like a minor third or a flat 7.

If your diatonic kalimba is in the key of C, it has all white notes on a certain piano scale, and no black notes. But the Alto kalimba is a diatonic kalimba in G.

It has teeth in F#, but skips the white note F natural.

Much of the music is entirely diatonic. You can play the whole melody with just the diatonic notes of your gecko kalimba.

And often, you can play the whole harmony with the same diatonic kalimba. A diatonic kalimba won't let you achieve 50% of music possible with all the notes, but a diatonic kalimba will probably let you play far more than 50% of the songs you know.

When songs and harmonies get more complicated, like jazz or classical music, you need more notes. And here's a little trick to get those other notes.

The Kalimba in high B flat

The melody has the Bb accidental on the chorus, "It's gonna be a BRIGHT, bright sun-shiney day", and you can actually play that on the Bb Treble Kalimba. You should be able to hear that the BRIGHT note is a little strange or unexpected.

The wait for a natural si has already been set on "IN my way".

About tuning and setting the Kalimba Bb Treble: The teeth are painted in the same way as the 17-note Kalimba (with the 6-tooth paint system).

The whole kalimba is tuned a whole step lower than the C kalimba. You can see me playing the C, the painted tooth in the middle of the right-hand side, at the end of the verse, on the second "sun-shiney DAY".

And then we modulate in the bridge. You can hear the Bb kalimba rising from C, to D, to Eb on the right-hand side.

That's a bit surprising, because the scale has already been firmly established to have a natural E, the 3rd major of C. 

The vocal part of the bridge can be played completely on this Bb kalimba, but what comes next requires even more notes!

The kalimba in high G

Perhaps the most magical aspect of this wonderful song is what follows the undulating swirl of chromatic chords; an instrumental section that finally brings us back to the verse.

While this segment appears to be entirely chromatic, it actually switches back and forth between diatonic chords.

Here's a little secret: the G-sharp kalimba is only used on one chord, which is played twice.

The chord is B minor, composed of B, D, and F#. While the first kalimba in C has the note B, neither of the other two kalimbas has F#. We can therefore move a few teeth slightly to help us play just the notes we need for the B minor chord.
