The kalimba is no longer the exclusive preserve of African culture. This instrument is now in production and available worldwide. There are many different versions, each more sophisticated than the last.
No need for music theory: tuning is quick and easy. You won't need electricity or a lot of money to buy a Gecko Kalimba.ย
It's important to remember that the kalimba is a musical instrument also known as the Mbira, so you'll be able to hear these different names. The Kalimba belongs to the lamellophone and percussion family, although it is not very well known in France.
The Kalimba Gecko is a maintenance-free instrument. Its size and portability make it ideal for travel. However, the Kalimba Gecko's teeth must be protected when you travel, otherwise they will tend to be pulled out of tune.
Why protect it?
Protecting your instrument at airports and on planes: Rule No. 1 is never to check instruments in with your luggage, unless it is impossible to transport them as hand luggage. Keep an eye on your instrument in the airport terminal. Consider using a Velcro strap to fasten it to your cart to prevent snatching. Concealing a Tile or similar tracer in your luggage will ensure a good recovery rate for stolen equipment. These products are particularly valuable for older equipment.
Keep your blades clean to protect them. You can extend the life of your strings by wiping them with a cloth or towel after playing.
Store your kalimba in a room close to the center of the building, rather than near an outside wall. This helps maintain a constant temperature. Store your kalimba in its case, upright or on its edge - never lying down - to prevent it being stepped on.ย
