The Kalimba is a modern version of the African mbira, and is also known as the Thumb Piano. The Kalimba can be used as a solo instrument or as an accompaniment for singers, musicians and dancers. It consists of a wooden plank (often fitted with a resonator) with staggered metal teeth, played by holding the instrument in the hands and pinching the teeth with the thumbs. Ideal for travel, religious ceremonies, weddings and other social events.

What makes the solid wood Kalimba such an enjoyable instrument to play?
There are so many reasons to love it!
If you play many different instruments, and although you like many of them, the solid wood kalimba will be your favorite.
Why do we love playing the solid wood kalimba so much?
The first reason you'll love playing the solid wood kalimba: it helps you see and understand music in a way that's completely different from any other instrument. The kalimba's unique arrangement of notes requires you to understand it physically rather than mentally. You learn what kind of thumb dance you need to do to complete a certain song. In a totally unique way, playing the kalimba really puts your consciousness into your body.
The second reason to love the solid wood kalimba
It's relatively easy to make quite complex music on the solid wood kalimba. The way the notes are arranged on most kalimbas helps you to play not only melodic lines, but also to accompany the melody with chords, arpeggios or even counterpoint.
The solid wood kalimba points you in a particular direction that facilitates many types of melody and accompaniment, but also makes other complex playing difficult, if not impossible. For example, the kalimba is a diatonic instrument and cannot play general chromatic music such as we see in jazz and classical pieces, as well as in some parts of popular music. Most of the time, however, it remains an excellent compromise.
The third reason you'll love the solid wood kalimba
The simplicity of the solid wood kalimba invites you to enter into a simplicity of spirit. If you approach the kalimba from the point of view of brute force, you won't really connect with the spirit of the instrument. Make yourself peaceful, gentle, open, receptive. Open your mind to tenderness. And the kalimba will slowly reveal its secrets over the days and years you play.
So playing the kalimba is like a form of meditation. And like meditation, the kalimba can transform us. It will help you think about what you do and who you are. And if those actions and "you "s aren't who you want to be, working with the kalimba will give you ideas and guidance on how to become that person you want to be.
The fourth reason why playing the solid wood kalimban is so much fun
Playing the kalimba is just plain fun! When you're on the right track, when the right notes come out of you, as if by magic... when you can feel yourself improving day by day and even moment by moment, it's a real pleasure.
In fact, finding that feeling of getting better and better, watching the notes line up on the tip of your thumb, seemingly all by themselves, is one of the reasons you'll keep learning to play new types of kalimba.
The fifth reason why playing the solid wood kalimba is so great
It's a unique sound that inspires you to make unique music.
The kalimba inspires simple, clear harmonies, wonderfully charming melodies and real musical and emotional sensitivity. Playing the kalimba is a bit like having an angel pedal instead of a distortion pedal.
And if you have the courage to play your kalimba with other people (you'll need to be aware of the tone of the music, and play your kalimba accordingly and that's a huge subject in itself), your kalimba's unique voice can fill its own special niche in the musical ecosystem.
The sixth reason to love solid wood kalimbas
The kalimba is small, easy to carry and hold, has a low environmental impact and is relatively inexpensive. Some people have to take a whole carload of equipment with them when they go out to play music... and some people can travel with a small suitcase containing just a few small instruments. It's light and easy.
